The design brief was to create a multi-generational home on a 235m2, 7.5m wide lot located in the heart of South Fremantle. The brief required the home to provide flexibility for ‘today and tomorrow’ allowing the home to be utilised as one single dwelling or separated into several independent liveable spaces.

Role:

Project lead, Building Designer & Architectural Technician

PAd. was commissioned to design and document 1 Commercial Street, South Fremantle from concept design through to construction completion. A challenging project due to the narrow nature of the site and prevalence of heritage listed properties within the street informed the vertically designed neo-federation home.

During the approval process PAd. negotiated and met with the City of Fremantle on numerous occasions to develop a working relationship and manage what was a sensitive approval process which facilitated the subsequent development and building permit approvals

PAd. also provided contract administration services throughout the construction phase to aid the client who was an owner builder which resulted in the project being completed on time, on budget and in full compliance with the City of Fremantle building permit conditions.

PAd. sought to select a construction methodology which was efficient and produced minimal waste whereby Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS) were utilised for the structure of the dwelling along with engineered timber roof and floor products.

Role:

Project Lead, Building Designer & Architectural Technician

PAd. was commissioned to design and document the Holbeck Street home from concept design through to construction completion. The brief of the project was to develop an environmentally conscious and economically viable solution for infill housing within the Perth location.

In response to the design brief, PAd. sought to focus on core solar passive design principles which complemented a stripped back, minimalist aesthetic. The core principles for a solar passive dwelling were developed rigidly and drove the design along with the direction for minimal waste and ornamentation.

PAd. sought to select a construction methodology which was efficient and produced minimal waste whereby Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS) were utilised for the structure of the dwelling along with engineered timber roof and floor products. Internally, all materials were selected based on low VOC properties and a preference for sustainably sourced and managed products such as the PEFC Certified OSB boards for the interior linings and selected floor sealants.

PAd. prepared and developed all Architectural documentation from concept design through to construction documentation and obtained all statutory approvals which required consultation with the local authority given the use of SIPS panels in 2010 were still relatively new to the Western Australian construction industry.

PAd. also provided contract administration services throughout the construction phase whereby the home was successfully completed in 2012 at a construction cost of $250,000.
